memory full/memory fool statement

The theory of symbols and language is entirely related to the theory of universe comprehension.

Speaking in essential semiotics terms, first things that mind registers are patterns of form and color, or visual perceptions in a flat dimension, and sounds or auditive perceptions in a lapse of time. The results of these are inferred objects because reality is only supposed, so, technically, this must be considered the first part when registering the perceived reality. Interpretation starts here, converting the inferences to abstractions and concepts, which have a different form and meaning in each mind according to the already known world. In order to convert these concepts into symbols, it is necessary to associate one of the perceptive paradigms with another concept in memory. The interpretation is the process in which the observed perceptions are joined into recognized paradigms and transformed into meanings, which are purely association of concepts. The interpretation is applied to all aspects of perceptive reality; it is a way of creating a personal version of perceptive reality, with the intention of reconstructing the actual course of events that occur in the world. A relation of symbols is settled through a learning process by living events and associating them in the memory. We develop a sense of functional rules of the perceived reality through trial and error and we constantly review our own versions of the events. This is achieved by using the scientific method by establishing a hypothesis and gathering data to verify it. If the information supports the hypothesis, it is considered correct but if contradicted, it must be reviewed.

memory full/memory fool will be carried out based on these principles of perception and interpretation. The project consists in the repetition of a system, in which, during four days Fernando Llanos will register in video and Enrique Greiner in audio, a peripheral trip equivalent in each case, where the axis will be the site where the exhibition is to take place. During these 4 days, the two artists will repeat the same tour registering all characteristics and minutiae that give the trips essence, each one in their own medium, capturing the visual and auditive perceptions. On the fifth day, after qualifying and manipulating the material, Greiner and Llanos do a live act from their portable computers interpreting the trip in a synopsis, mixing audio and video in real time.

By taking apart the sound from the image and digitally processing it on computers, the artists will synthesize and transform forms and sounds, detaching them from their place in time and space, taking them as pure visual forms and sounds without any meaning. The artists will illustrate the way the brain functions to comprehend through this intellectual process, and how interpretation takes place through the reconstruction of memory (in the live act).
The result of the process will be a DVD in which Llanos and Greiner’s interpretation of the outing will remain as a document to be exhibited on a monitor or a projection. memory full/memory fool will take place in different cities. The collection of the documents will register the memory of what their minds have shared as an experience of the trip leaving behind the absurd idea that there is only one way to perceive and that the circumstance is what actually changes and transforms the way of seeing, feeling and remembering a journey.

At the same time Llanos and Greiner are capturing sound and image, Francisca Rivero-Lake will document their everyday intellectual and perceptive process. Each day the 3 memory full/memory fool members will discuss the work development. This will constitute a sort of break down diary where thoughts, perception of the moment, conversations and images related to the work will constitute an important tool for giving each performance context and giving an inside of the process. These materials will be published together with the life act documents into a catalogue.
One of the memory’s characteristics is its ability to change, which means that the significance of the facts changes as time goes by, while the facts remain. memory full/memory fool takes this game of words to express this condition that will be exhaustively proved by Llanos’s and Greiner’s tours in each city and the reconstruction of each excursion.

The project is divided into 4 parts:

1. Record and manipulation of visual and audio material taken during a 4-day rout around the exhibition space.
2. Life act where the audio and the visual materials are put together in order to reenact the rout take around the gallery space.
3. This final process will be documented in a DVD that can be shown later as a projection or on a monitor.
4. The different locations DVDs will make a collection that will be compiled into a catalogue.

Technical requirements for the Live Act:
Video:
1 4 channel video mixer
2 2000 lumens video projector (minimum)
2 VHS VCR: NTSC or PAL

Sound:
Amplifier, monitor and audio systems suitable for the exhibition space.

Access to a G4 computer for DVD transference.

After the live act the DVD document can be latter exhibit in a video projector or a monitor, if so, the requirements are:
DVD player

A video projector or a monitor with sound system.
